Our meeting this week was held at John and Sheila’s. One thing becoming clear is that tasting the wine blind makes things much more interesting. It does seem to take out any pre-conceived ideas one might have about the wine regarding the country of origin, or type of grape. On this occasion John even ensured that Sheila was unaware of just what was hidden behind the newspaper wrapping.
We were very pleased to see Dave and Molly join us on this occasion so numbers are growing.
It was very interesting to see Brian guess the correct origin for the first wine as Californian and with a comment of “I am sure I have tasted this before” his time in the USA, had obviously not been spent without tasting the occasional bottle of local wine
In the event it was two wines almost universally judged by the group as wines they would certainly buy for themselves in future. The two wines in question were a Californian Zinfandel from Paloma Creek @£4.49 and a Chilean Merlot, Viajerot Gran Reserva @5.99. The wines received an average score of 7.5 and 5.7 respectively and both are available from Lidl’s. Again we also had some excellent cheese to accompany the wine.
For those with a historical interest, the Italian grape Primitivo from the Puglia region is the ancestor of Zinfandel so if that wine appeals - try a Primitivo as well.
The next meeting will be held at Pat and Brian’s on May 20th
