Meeting 26th August 2008

10 of us got together at Ray and Junes for this end of summer meeting. June had prepared a very French style starter and aperitif for us all, which they had enjoyed on their recent holiday in France near Cahors. There is a great tradition of sweet white wines in the French South West and it is often used to accompany pâté. We were treated to Pâté au foie de Canard and also some Pâté au Rocomadour accompanied by a lovely glass of Monbazillac from the Dordogne area.

We did get round to some wine tasting as well and two New World reds were very well appreciated. The first was a McGuigan's 2004 Shiraz (£4.99 - Sainsbury’s). This wine obtained an average score of 6.9 from the group. It was an unusual Shiraz without the general well pronounced fruity nose but a very easy drinking wine with an almost sweetish full of fruit taste that was liked by all. The second was an Argento 2007 Bonarda from Argentina. (£5.17 – Morrison’s). Although the average score was the same at 6.9 there was a greater variation of opinion with several 8’s but also a 5. Very similar to the Shiraz but there was more fruit, more body and more tannin. We also enjoyed a great selection of English cheeses with the wine.

No meeting in September as most of the group are away in France on the French group’s visit to Monet’s Garden at Giverny. Our next meeting will be well into autumn on October 28th at Pat and Brian’s
