Meeting 22nd January 2009

Our first meeting of 2009 proved to have a very interesting choice of wines provided by John and Sheila and the choice certainly brought out some very eloquent descriptions much to everyone’s amusement. John and Sheila had chosen two red wines at different ends of the price spectrum to see whether there was any discernible difference as detected by the group. As usual we also had a very fine selection of cheeses to accompany our two glasses of wine.

The first wine was a 2007 Italian Bardolino @ £2.79 from Lidl’s . The second was a 2006 Wolf Blass, Cabernet Sauvignon @ £8.91 from Asda. The first wine overall, was not given particularly high scores but the choice of wines did demonstrate what a very individual experience, tasting wine can be and our own choice of wine can be quite different to other peoples. Everyone agreed the wine had a very good rich ruby red colour to it, whilst some of the comments such as very new, fresh, sharp, little bouquet and most notably a “peasant wine” indicated it was not going to be a high scoring wine. However the wine did pass the key test when it came to the question as to whether they would have a second glass and two of our group were quite complimentary. The average score for the wine was 5.3

The second wine also had a very attractive deep colour and generally was much liked with a high scoring 9 and also an 8. Much more full bodied a mature oaky flavour, long after taste and very smooth. Ideal to drink by the fireside was another of our more poetic comments. Although two people actually preferred the first wine, the overall average score was a very respectable 7.2

Our next meeting will be at Dave and Mollies at 2 pm on February 24th
