A slightly depleted group on this occasion but it was another lovely summer’s day as we sat out in Pat and Brian’s garden to sample another two wines from around the world. The theme on this occasion, as we eventually discovered, was to try the same grape but with one bottle from the new world and the other from the old. Pat and Brian’s new world choice was a Coonawarra 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon (from ASDA at £5.98). This was a dark red, almost chocolate in colour and slightly hazy. A strong fruity smell of plums or black cherries, slightly sweet with some tannic undertones; a medium to heavy wine with a long lasting taste. We all struggled to correctly guess the grape and its geographical location but it received a fairly typical average score from the group of 7.1
Representing the old world, the second wine, also from ASDA, was a French Cabernet Sauvignon, a 2008 vin de Pays d’Oc “Les Jamelles”. This was a very attractive clear bright deep red wine, of medium intensity, but no identifiable fruit smell. The wine appeared to be well balanced, low in tannins, medium/light in body and was not particularly long lasting in its taste. Again we struggled to indentify the grape and its growing location but the group also gave this a very typical average score of 7.3. As usual we enjoyed some excellent cheeses and finished off with coffee and the inevitable dissection of the world and local events.
The next meeting is on August 11th, 2.00pm, at Jack’s.
