Meeting August 11th

Our third meeting outdoors this year - perhaps we have had a rather good summer after all despite the BBC’s retraction of their “barbecue summer” forecast. Certainly the weather could not have been better as we sat in the shade on Jacks patio, tasting his wine selection for the month. As usual we had a very interesting choice and yet again it was the cheaper wine which received the highest group score and not only the highest score on the day but the highest score so far that any wine has been accorded. This was a Gallo Winemaker Seal, Ruby Cabernet. The colour was a very deep ruby red enhanced by the brilliant sunshine perhaps, but a pleasant plummy smell or as one member of group described it - like the fruit on a fruits of forest gateaux. The taste had a little sweetness, again plenty of fruit, was well balanced with sufficient tannin and a long after taste. A very easy wine to drink. No surprise then to find everyone was very impressed and the wine received a group average score of 8.3. It is available from Asda at £4.58.
Perhaps the second wine suffered from having such a good wine to follow but again almost universally, comments such as nondescript, no character, not unpleasant but nothing to really talk about, no tannin, no fruit and thus no surprise to find the wine scored at 6.1. This was a Gran Familia Rioja again from Asda at £5.28.

As it was also Mike’s birthday and much to his surprise, a cake - with candles - appeared as well a card and an accompanying bottle of Champagne. Coffee/tea and cake, rounded off a very pleasant summer’s afternoon in Ashurst
The next meeing is on September 22nd at Molly and Dave's, 2:00 pm
