We started off our 2010 wine tasting at Jacks, with two attractive selections of French Wine. Jack had decided to perhaps test our memories as the first wine was one that we had tasted on a previous occasion back in March 2008 – a La Chasse du Pape (2008), from the Côte de Rhone region. The wine is blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Cinsault. Interestingly enough, on this occasion the group gave the wine the same average score of 6.5 as it had on the previous occasion - perhaps indicating some degree of consistency in our deliberations? The wine was generally judged to be of a clear light red appearance, pleasant, medium nose but no strong character. The taste was considered to be a smooth, light wine of reasonable length, slightly acidic, with some light fruit flavours. The wine is available from Asda at £6.18, surprisingly a little less that the £6.50 it had cost in 2008.
The second wine was a Côte de Beaune Village 2006 from the southern region of Burgundy – an area perhaps more famous for its white wines than its’ reds. This was preferred by the group to the first one as shown by the score of 7.7 A bright healthy red wine, a clean and pleasant nose, with various fruits mentioned (plum, raspberry, loganberry). Medium bodied, slight tannin, with lasting fruit flavours. Also purchased from Asda at £11.49 but now believed to be out of stock.
As usual the tasting was accompanied by some excellent cheese followed by tea and coffee.
The next meeting will be held at Pat and Brian’s on February 16th 14:00
