Our normal fare has tended to be red wines but Pat and Brian had chosen two delicious white wines for us to taste this week - I think just to remind us all during these grey February days that we are currently experiencing, that there are blue skies and sunshine out there somewhere. The first wine was a San Martino Veneto Pinot Grigio, - £4.99 from Wine Rack in Romsey. Only the second Italian wine we have tried and certainly the first white wine. Clear, bright and pale straw in colour, it had a very clean and pleasant nose. Various fruits were alluded to including grapefruit, peaches and lemon. The taste was smooth, medium dry with the same fruit overtones although the flavour was fairly short lasting. Well liked by the group it received an above average score of 7.2.
The second wine was a Chilean Casillero del Diablo Sauvignon Blanc. Casillero del Diablo is one of major brands from Concha y Toro who are the largest producer of wine in Latin America. Most of their vineyards are in Chile but it also has a presence in Mendoza across the border in Argentina. The wine was a bright light white gold in colour. Aromatic notes of herbs, and gooseberries contributed to the bouquet and the taste was refreshingly crisp with citrus and tropical fruit flavours shining through. A long lasting flavour ensured a high group score of 8. This wine was also purchased from Wine Rack in Romsey at £6.99.
We had our usual excellent selection of cheeses to accompany the wine and completed the afternoon with some tea and coffee
Next meeting is at Dave and Mollie’s Tuesday 23rd March 14:00
