2010 Meeting March 23rd

This week, Mollie and Dave had chosen an interesting contrast of two very different French wines for us to taste. The first was a 2008 Beaujolais Villages. A bright and fresh red wine, with the usual Beaujolais characteristics of being light bodied, fruity and fairly acidic. There was no particular length to the flavour and not a favourite of the group judging from an overall average score of 6.4. The second wine was a Cellier des Dauphins 2008, Cru des Côtes du Rhône, from Vinsobres - a village a few km NW of Orange. A full-bodied and deeply coloured smoky red wine that clung to the glass as it was swirled, plenty of rich plum and blackberry flavours from a wine that is made from predominately the Grenache grape, with some Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault added to the blend. A fragrant red with long lasting flavours that was popular with the group and gained an average score of 8.1. Both wines are available from ASDA at £5.99 and £8.95 respectively. We enjoyed the usual fine selection of cheeses followed by tea and coffee.
Next meeting is at Ray and June’s, Tuesday 20th April at 14:00
