Meeting 14th September

The beginning of autumn saw the group at Pat and Brian’s sampling two red wines both of which were very suitable for accompanying the dishes that come into their own at this time of year - casseroles and stews!! Interesting again to see that price does not seem to be a factor as far as the scoring of each bottle of wine and that everyone’s palate can differ quite considerably. On both these wines there was quite a variation in the perceived qualities of the wine. For example, clarity varied from clear to hazy, body from light to heavy, acidity from well balanced to tart. Where the group did agree was on the tannin in the mouth – both had little tannin, and the length of the flavour wine 1 “Yes” wine 2 “No”. The first wine was a 2009 Nederburg Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz. Nederburg is a winery based the Western Cape of South Africa and was first established in 1791. There is also an interesting link to beer perhaps unusual for a winemaker, as one of the owners in the early 20th century was also a part owner of the Haake-Beck brewery in Bremen which still produces Becks beer today. There was also a significant influence from the German wine making area of Rheingau. The wine received an overall score of 7.3 - just above our average and was generally well liked by the group. Priced at £6.39.
The second wine was almost half the price at £3.99 but still received an overall score of 7.1. This was a South Eastern Australian Cabernet Sauvignon.

Our next meeting is at Mollie and Dave’s – 14:00 on Tuesday the 12th October
