Mollie and Dave had made very interesting choice of wines for this months meeting. The first wine, a very sweet red wine, was a Kourtaki Mavrodaphne of Patras and was certainly something we had not tasted on any previous occasion. The initial response from nearly everyone was how much like a sweet sherry it was and it certainly went down very well gaining an overall average score of 8. Unlike last month, both wines were scored very consistently by the group with very little variation in the scores. The Mavrodaphne is a dark-skinned grape which produces aromatic and generally sweet wines and originates from the Achaia region in the Peloponnese, Greece.
The second wine was a more traditional red wine selection, a 2005 Lagunilla Rioja Reserva, from Spain. Lots of ripe fruit in the nose, a good balance of oak and with blackberry, liquorice and vanilla flavours plus a reasonable finish. A typical wine perhaps to go with the Sunday Roast. The group gave this an average score of 7.6. Both wines are available from Morrison’s at £4.79 and £11.99 respectively although the second wine was discounted on the day down to £8.45.
Next meeting is at John and Sheila’s, 14:00 on Tuesday November 16th. Our Xmas meeting will be at Ray and Junes, 14:00 on Thursday 16th December.
