Meeting October 27th

For our meeting at Pam and Mike's this month, a slight difference. We decided to spend some of our current surplus funds on some wine that was a little more expensive than usual – Did we get value for money? Read on!

The first wine we tasted was a 2007 Reserve Shiraz . This is available from Waitrose at £ 8.99. It was a rich red wine made from 100% Shiraz grapes by Waitrose in partnership with the Barossa Valley (South Australia) winery, St Hallett. It had ripe red and black fruit flavours, hints of spice and a smooth chocolately, oaky finish. Generally well liked by the group it gained an overall score of 8. The second wine was also a Barossa wine but was Henry’s Seven, a blend of shiraz, grenache, mourvedre and viognier from the Henschke winery, also from Waitrose at £16.99. Generally liked by the group for its deep red colour, and long fruit taste but it was not considered to be anything outstanding and overall received an average score of 7.5. So although both wines scored well, there was no significant difference on this occasion between the expensive wines and the better value wines that we have usually purchased. As usual we had a good selection of cheese to accompany our wine and finished off with tea and coffee.
The next meeting is at John and Sheila’s on November 24th , 2pm and again we are going to venture some of our surplus cash on some slightly more expensive wine. We look forward to tasting the results!!
