Unfortunately I was unable to attend the November meeting hence the delay and a combined report for the two months.
November’s meeting was held at John and Sheila’s with two very good South Australian wines to taste. Both wines were blends. The first wine was a 2006 Chateau Tanunda – a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot - a classic Bordeaux blend and judging from the score of 7.9 was very popular with the group. A very aromatic wine, rich and fruity, well balanced with a lingering taste. The second wine was “Pikes The Red Mullet” a more complex wine, predominantly Shiraz but also containing small amounts of Tempranillo, Mourvedre and Grenache. This was a medium wine of deep red to purple with a nose of ripe plums. The taste was of plum, blueberry and cherry, some soft tannins and slightly spicy. Not quite as well liked as the first wine but with a very consistent score across the group of 7.4. Both wines are available from Threshers in Lyndhurst at £9.99
December’s meeting was held at Ray and June’s. Christmas was very much in evidence and as well as tasting some interesting wines and the usual excellent cheese board, mince pies and home made sausage rolls ensured we were all, well and truly fed and watered. The two wines in question were a La Consulta Pinot Noir from Argentina and a 2006 Buckingham Estate Shiraz from Western Australia. Both wines are available from Morrisons at the same price of £4.99. Group average scores were 7.1and 7.9 respectively. However as always, averages can hide the story as the La Consulta bottle gained a wide spread of scores from 4 to 9 and therefore there were some dissenters from the general comments. It was a well presented wine with a lovely healthy bright red appearance. The smell was a clean with a fruity character and the taste was well balanced with a slight sweetness, a little tannin and the flavour of berry fruits. The Buckingham Estate shiraz gained a far more consistent score. It was assessed as a medium wine of a deep ruby red in appearance. A plummy peppery character, slight sweetness, smooth and well balanced and with a reasonable length of flavour.
We start our 2010 activities at Jack’s on the 19th of January.
