Our first wine this month was a Montes 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon. Montes is a relatively new wine producer founded in 1989, with vineyards located in the Colchagua valley, in the O’Higgins region of Chile which is located some 100 Kilometres south of the capital Santiago. The Colchagua valley has a reputation for producing some of the best wines in Chile and certainly if this particular bottle was a representative, it did not disappoint. The overall score was 8.0 so one of our higher scoring wines. A very attractive appearance of a clear bright and deep red hue. A pleasant nose of dark fruits with hints of the oak, The taste was well balanced with a little tannin, a black currant and plum flavour and a good length of taste. Excellent value at £5.99 from Morrisons.
Our second wine took us back to Europe with an Italian wine from Sicily. An Inycon Sicilia 2009 Shiraz Viognier – the blend was 95% Shiraz and 5% Viognier. The vineyards are located along the South West coast of Sicily and as a group Inycon have been producing wines for the past 50 years. The wine again had a very attractive bright deep red appearance, the nose was clean with a medium intensity and a character of dried fruits and spice. The taste was smooth, very little tannin, not a lot of fruit in the taste, the flavour did not really last at all. The group score was 7.2, just over our average so although not as good as the first wine, at £4.99 (also Morrisons) it also represented good value.
Our next meeting is at Ray and June’s, 2.00 pm on Tuesday 21st June.
